Let’s get something straight here, painting your home’s interior isn’t the same as painting the exterior. The reason being, the exterior is always subjected to the weather, the sun, and not forgetting wear and tear. What this means is that the paint color, as well as the sheen used on the exterior, will be different from the ones you choose for the interior. And while you have a wide range of paints to choose from for the interiors, the ones for exteriors are more limited as you can only choose between flat and satin. The one you choose between the two depends on the kind of paint job you are looking for. In this article, we will take a look at both of these paints, and thereby help you select the one that you need.

Flat paints

Flat paint is not that reflective and when you run your hand across it, you will find that it’s rough and chalky, which makes it the best choice of paint for surfaces with bumps, holes, and several other imperfections. And since your home’s exterior will likely have many imperfections due to the weather and many years of use, flat paint is the ideal choice of paint to use.

Satin paints

This paint has a bit more reflection than flat paints. The paint does a decent job when it comes to covering up the imperfections in your exterior. Unlike flat paints, satin paints are smoother to the touch and can be cleaned more easily, not to mention they look a bit more sophisticated thanks to their shiny appearance. If the paint isn’t thoroughly mixed, the sheen in satin paints tends to be uneven, and that means the laps marks will be more noticeable once the paint dries.

Flat or satin?

The type of paint you choose for your exterior depends on your personal preferences and the manner in which you will be painting. Now, if you decide to paint the exterior yourself, you may want to use flat paints as any mistake you might make won’t be easily seen. This is especially so if your home’s exterior has imperfections you would like to cover up. While both of these paints are great for covering up imperfections, flat paints do a better job in doing so. But if your home is new and doesn’t have these many imperfections, you can use satin paints. In addition, if your home gets dirty often, consider using satin paints as they are easier to clean.
